As I sat in the dentist chair at Joseph Zimmer’s office for my routine 6-month cleaning—looking up at the massive glitter art piece on the ceiling—I felt inspired to write this post.

One of the reasons I actually look forward to visiting my dentist, besides the fact that he’s a very good doctor and has a great staff of people working for him, is because of his art collection.

My absolute favorite is the six-foot glitter girl holding a tiger, on the ceiling of the very top floor of the medical and dental building in downtown Seattle. The piece “Rescue” by Rene Garcia, Jr. was commissioned by Dr. Zimmer.

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.
—Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton said that “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Art has always been a huge part of my life and career. I feel art in my soul, like it’s another language in which we speak that can’t be fully articulated by words.

Maybe that’s why I enjoy losing myself in the beauty and intrigue that hangs on these office walls, especially if it means distracting me from what can be an anxiety-inducing experience. (On a side note, when did we all become so afraid of the dentist office?)

If you live in Seattle and you’re in the market for a new dentist or a unique gallery experience, you should give Dr. Zimmer a call, or check out the office during the annual summer rooftop party.

Oh, and ask to meet the office manager—a cat named Sumi! Seriously!
