The Mint Julep is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. To ensure my party guests have a cocktail in hand upon arrival, I pre-make a batch for Derby Day. Instead of the traditional method of muddling mint leaves, my recipe calls for Mint-infused Simple Syrup. It’s more user friendly for your Derby party, and it’s great to have on hand when you need a spur of the moment refreshing bourbon drink.

–FOR ONE–

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 oz Mint Simple Syrup
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 2 oz Woodford Reserve bourbon (it’s the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, but you can use any bourbon you’d like. I also favor Bulleit Bourbon or Buffalo Trace)
  • Fresh mint sprig, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1
Make the Mint Simple Syrup.

STEP 2
To highball glass or Mint Julep cup, add minted simple syrup, then fill with crushed ice. Add bourbon and splash of water (optional).

STEP 3
Add enough of remaining ice to fill glass. Stir well and garnish with mint sprig and metal julep straw.

Crushed ice is a key ingredient in the Mint Julep. I scored this sweet vintage ice crusher, but I also like the ease of this mallet and bag option or this heavy-duty electric ice-shaver. Silver julep cups are awesome, but you can go the more affordable route without sacrificing style with these Crate & Barrel glasses.

–FOR A BATCH–
(makes about 20 servings / 90 total oz)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1.75 L bottle of Woodford Reserve
  • 30 oz Mint Simple Syrup
  • 3-4 bunches mint for syrup and garnish

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1
Make the Mint Simple Syrup and cool in fridge.

STEP 2
In a beverage dispenser that holds at least 90 ounces, add the Bourbon and Mint Simple Syrup. Stir to combine. Chill in fridge.

STEP 3
Soon before serving, prep the crushed ice. I use this electric ice-shaver for large parties. I shave a good sized container before guests arrive so I’m ready to throw together drinks right away.

STEP 4
Prep mint garnish by portioning out mint sprigs and stick in a short glass of water to stay fresh.

STEP 5
Shortly before serving, stir Mint Julep, then sample. At this point, you can add water to dilute the cocktail to desired taste, if needed. Adding the water helps the recipe be a little less boozy and it’ll serve more people. Add about 6 ounces at a time, then taste.

STEP 6
When ready to serve, fill glass with crushed ice, dispense chilled cocktail into glass, then fill with more crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprig and colorful straw.

  1. I’m a southern girl, half Kentucky/half Tennessee and have never once been to that derby or to the Grand ‘Ol Opry! But life is much like you debcrise it otherwise, with lots of HUMIDITY thrown in 😉 C’mon down!
