One month ago, I subscribed to Blue Apron when my friend, Angela, sent me a promo code for a week’s worth of free meals. I had been cooking at home more and was falling into a recipe rut, so I thought I’d give it a try.
It was really easy to create an account, sign up, and pick the 3 meals (out of an option of 6) that I want delivered to my door.
It’s been a really great experience for the most part. I’ve learned new technics and got my hands on ingredients that I’ve never attempted to cook with before. It’s a great value at $60 a week for 3 meals (for 2 people) because I can’t get out of the grocery store for less than $60 (there’s also a 4-person plan). I don’t have to purchase an entire jar of [insert ingredient] that I’ll only use once before it goes bad. Plus, I don’t have to put any thought into meal-planning for the week. I can also put my subscription on pause if I’m on vacation or I know it’ll be a busy week with lots of dinning out. It’s a win-win-win.
I have had a few issues with my box missing an ingredient or the protein leaking all over, but I’ve contacted Blue Apron about the issues and they’ve made it right each time.
Most of the dishes were big winners— like the Spiced Lamb & Beef Tagine with Lemon-Garlic Couscous & Labneh (1), Beef Arepas with Pickled Onion, Avocado & Radishes (8), and Spicy Hoisin Turkey Meatballs with Sautéed Zucchini & Brown Rice (11)—but a couple fell a little flat for me (the hubby liked them all at varying levels of yumminess).
Pro Tips:
- Measure everything! Some ingredients are portioned out to the amount you need, but sometime you’ll have extra. Don’t make the mistake of adding too much spice/vinegar/sugar to your dish on accident.
- Do all your prep before you start cooking so you don’t have too many things going on at once.
- Read the recipe card carefully. I find that it’s a little hard to follow sometimes. Always double check the amount of each thing you need to add by going back to the ingredients list.
- Download the Blue Apron app and get tips and how-to videos on prepping ingredients—it’s really helpful!
If you want to try it for the first time, send me your email and I’ll get you a free week.
For those of you who have tried it—What do you think? What are your favorite meals? Will you keep subscribing?
