Sangria is a fun and refreshing cocktail to make for a party, a barbecue or even a festive Tuesday night. This recipe is a place to start, but it’s easy to make it your own with fresh fruit and wine that you have on hand.
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
-
750ml bottle of inexpensive Spanish red wine (like Tempranillo, Rioja, Garnacha)
-
1 green apple
-
1 orange
-
1/2 cup Cointreau (or, in a pinch, just use simple syrup)
-
1/2 cup Brandy (or Cognac)
-
Sparkling Water
-
Ice
- Fresh mint sprig, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
Core and chop the apple into 1-inch pieces. Cut the orange into slices.
STEP 2
Pour the wine, Cointreau, Brandy and chopped fruit into a pitcher and give it a stir. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Time allows the natural sweetness of the fruit to blend with the wine, and if you tried to drink it right away it would taste harsh and unbalanced.
STEP 3
When ready to serve, stir the pitcher of ingredients to make sure everything is mixed together. Add ice and a few pieces of fruit to each glass. Then fill with wine and top with a splash of sparkling water, or more to taste.
(Try experimenting with other fruits you might have on hand like lemon, lime, pineapple, grapes, peaches, and pears. The general rule is you want to have equal citrus fruit and non-citrus fruits. For a lighter flavor, use wine wine or rose!)
